The World Ocean Database (WOD) is the largest collection of ocean profile-plankton data encompassing the world ocean. Data are in one common format with quality control flags applied to all data. The WOD is a product of IOC/IODE and ICSU efforts from the time these organizations were founded but it is mainly an IODE product. The WOD represents a great deal of cooperation between countries and between scientific institutions. The various versions of WOD and products based on WOD such as the World Ocean Atlas series of publications have been cited several thousand times in the scientific literature. Climate change studies based on the data in WOD have figured prominently in the scientific literature and in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) assessments. In this talk we review the status of the WOD, how WOD is used in climate change studies, and review climate change related scientific findings based on WOD.
