The Nineteenth Session of the IOC Committee on International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE-XIX) washeld at the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy between 12 and 16 March 2007. The event was co-hosted between the ICTP and OGS (L'Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale).
IODE-XIX Elects new Chairpersons
The Committee elected Mr Gregory Reed (Australia) and Dr Malika Bel-Hassen (Tunisia) as IODE Co-Chairs. In cooperation with the IODE Secretariat they will manage the IODE Programme during the next two and a half years (2007-2009).
Dr Malika Bel-Hassen Abid (elected IODE Co-Chair), Mr Ricardo Rojas (IODE past Vice-Chair), Dr Lesley Rickards (IODE past Chair) and Mr Greg Reed (elected IODE Co-Chair), smiling at the end of the busy IODE-XIX Session.
PRACTICAL INFORMATION PROVIDED TO THE PARTICIPANTS
This information was provided to participants prior to the Session.
THE HOST
The Nineteenth Session of IODE is hosted by the "National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics – OGS". OGS is a public research institute. Named Osservatorio Geofisico Sperimentale until 1989, its roots go back to the second half of 18th century. Its mission is to promote, co-ordinate and perform, also in collaboration with other national, international, and European institutions, studies and research on the Earth and its resources. Moreover, the Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR), can use the OGS for supporting and co-ordinating the Italian participation to international entities, projects and initiatives in oceanography and applied geophysics. The OGS activities are carried out by the departments of: Geophysics of the Lithosphere (GDL), Oceanography (OGA), Seismology (CRS), Development of Marine Technology Research (RIMA), Biological Oceanography (BIO). These departments are also supported by: Center for Informatic and Telematic Services (CESIT), Promotion and International Collaboration (PECIB).
THE VENUE: ICTP
ICTP (http://www.ictp.it/) is located in Trieste, Italy (see figure).
Founded in 1964, the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) operates under a tripartite agreement between the Government of Italy and two UN agencies, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The Centre is located along the coast of the Adriatic Sea, in northeast Italy, about 10 kilometres from the city of Trieste.
ICTP staff scientists are international experts who do research at the cutting edge of their fields. Constant interactions with a large number of visiting scientists enable many of the Centre's research activities to remain at the cutting-edge. Scientists from developed and developing countries attending ICTP activities learn from one another in a stimulating environment that remains responsive to the needs of world-class scientists without neglecting the needs of researchers, particularly young researchers from the developing world, to remain at the forefront of their fields. The Centre sponsors a number of initiatives, including an Associates Programme, to provide research and training opportunities in physical sciences.
ICTP welcomes about 5,000 scientists each year. About 50% of the 100,000 scientists who have participated in ICTP research activities since the Centre's inception in 1964 are from developing countries. Visitors have represented some 170 nations and 40 international organizations.
THE IODE-XIX SESSION: FINDING YOUR WAY
The IODE-XIX Session will take place at the Main Building of ICTP (see below image). This building is the first building you will see when arriving at ICTP from the main road. When entering the building on Monday 12 March you should first register at the Registration desk (9). You will then receive your name badge which will be your access badge to the building for the duration of the Session. The Session will be held in the Main Lecture Hall (2). Coffee breaks will be held outside the main lecture hall (in the area between the reception desk (9) and Secretariat office (8).

Inside the Main Lecture Hall
The Main Lecture Hall has a seating capacity of about 200. Whereas we usually work in a U-shape configuration, this time we will work in an auditorium configuration (see below).

The entire Main Lecture Hall and surrounding areas is covered by a Wireless network. You will receive your userID and password for this when you register at the registration desk on Monday 12 March. You will only be able to access the Wireless network with those parameters. To use your laptop in the Main Lecture Hall we will try to have power outlets available for as many participants as possible but we will not be able to satisfy everyone (100 participants) at all seats. You may need to
share an outlet in an alternating fashion (2 hours for you and 2 hours for your neighbour).
The working room at each seat is limited (see image) as one table will be shared by 2 people. It is therefore advised that you bring to the Session only those document required for that day.
Lunch will be taken in the ICTP Cafeteria which is one floor up (Terrace level) from the Main Lecture Hall in the same building. You will need to cover the cost of your lunch. Various options are available in the cafeteria. If you are in a hurry then you can also choose something small in the Bar (First Floor), also in the main building.
On Monday 12 March, between 18h30 and 10h00 our local host invites us all for a reception which will be held just outside the Main Lecture Hall (where also the coffee/tea will be served twice a day). Your spouse/partner is welcome to the reception If you wish to bring your spouse/partner then please inform Secretariat Staff (A. Vannier) when you register on Monday 12 March.
In addition OGS is inviting us all for a group dinner on Thursday 15 March starting at 20h00 at the Adriatico Guesthouse. If you wish to bring your spouse/partner then please inform Secretariat Staff (A. Vannier) when you register on Monday 12 March.
Posters and demos
We welcome posters and demonstrations that illustrate the achievements of the NODCs and National Ocean Libraries. There will be two areas for posters and demos: the first area will be in the area where coffee/tea are served. This area will be used preferably for software/website demo Pcs and associated posters. There will be space for only a few demos and poster panels. Posters should be approx. 70x100 cm in dimensions.
The second area is a corridor that circles around the Main Lecture Hall. This corridor has a total of 44 panels on which you can affix posters of 70x100 cm (they are fixed to the panel with magnets).
If you wish to display poster(s) or set up a demo PC then please let us know by email (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. )not later than 1 February 2007 so we can make the necessary arrangements with the local organizers.
Internet access
If you don't bring your own laptop computer then Internet access is also available through about 5 Internet "kiosks".
How to get there...
You can find more detailed information on the location of ICTP and how to get there through the web page http://www.ictp.it/pages/info/whereisictp.html.
You can take a virtual tour of the ICTP through this page: http://www.ictp.it/pages/info/virtual.html
Hotel information is available in Document IOC/IODE-XIX/Inf. 1. Please indicate that you are participating in the IODE-XIX Session when you make your reservation.
Note that IODE-XIX is organized back-to-back with the SeaDataNet plenary meeting. More information on this event can be found on http://www.seadatanet.org/annualmeeting1/ispra2007.htm
