OBIS is taking part in an EU-funded project, MARCO-BOLO (MARine COastal BiOdiversity Long-term Observations) which aims to structure and strengthen European coastal and marine biodiversity observation capabilities.
The main objective is to enable a digital framework for coastal and marine biodiversity data streams and data access. This will be done by building on international standards and approaches to establish the biological component of the marine
and coastal Earth observation Infrastructure in Europe. One of Marco-Bolo’s main aims is a more effective knowledge transfer and uptake of data and information products through the establishment of a stakeholder community and close engagement through co-design/co-creation workshops.
UNESCO-IOC is seeking an individual consultant to assist with the coordination of the Marco- Bolo project and more specifically the work related to Work Package 6 “Stakeholder Engagement and Community Integration”.

UNESCO-IOC is seeking an individual consultant to collect, review and make available existing marine biodiversity information from the marine world heritage sites taking part in this eDNA project. This should include both species occurrence data from traditional methods as well as possible existing eDNA datasets and reference barcodes. The data will be used to complement the eDNA data resulting from the eDNA expeditions and will be used for assessing biodiversity at the sites and help develop more complete climate change scenarios.

Under the supervision of the Head, IOC CD Secretariat, Peter Pissierssens, the contractor shall:

Conduct a thorough review and collate all references/information documents related to capacity development programmes/projects/activities (organized or ongoing in 2022-2023) relating to ocean science, observation, data management, services (including DRR), marine policy and related SDGs
-
Develop a systematic approach in creating an inventory of content collected under (1.) above;
-
Design the field structure of the database (so the IT consultant can develop the application) including field type, valid entries, vocabularies;
-
Compare and map related capacity development strategies and approaches (from inputs of (2.) vis-a-vis the outputs and activities under the current IOC CD Strategy framework;
-
Share information and consolidate feedbacks from key stakeholders (list to be provided by IOC Secretariat) on major issues, priorities, expectations, proposed revisions and other recommendations to the 2023-2030 strategy;
-
Enter data in XLS file (for later import into the database), complying with the field structure and format rules designed during the previous stage;
-
Coordinate with the database builder (contact information to be provided by the IOC Secretariat) on the development of design and structure of the online database (in parallel);
-
Present summary of review and analysis to the IOC Working Group;

Submit a comprehensive report on key findings and recommendations to be submitted for the consideration by the Working Group
