RDA-2 outcomes

RDA smallThe RDA Second Plenary Meeting was held in Washington DC, USA between 16-18 September 2013. The event was attended by more than 400 participants. Full information on the event can be obtained from the RDA web site on https://www.rd-alliance.org/future-events

RDA aims to bring together experts from various scientific and technical disciplines dealing with data and information management. Within the IODE community we are dealing with the same or similar issues in data management: metadata, vocabularies, persistent identifiers, long-term preservation, data citation, etc. By sharing our experience across disciplines we may be able to work better and we may be able to respond to society's demand for multidisciplinary data services and products. Through involvement in RDA we may be able to interconnect our data systems. The vision statement of the IOC Strategic Plan for Oceanographic data and Information Management (2013-2016) is: "A comprehensive and integrated ocean data and information system, serving the broad and diverse needs of IOC Member States, for both routine and scientific use".

During this plenary IODE contributed to RDA mainly through participation in the Marine Data Harmonization Interest Group, chaired by Helen Glaves (ODIP project coordinator). The meeting of the Interest Group on 17 September agreed on the following objectives:

  • Support, promote, and facilitate the harmonization of ongoing work of current marine data interoperability efforts (IODE, ODIP etc) and provide the link to the technical activities of the RDA WG/IGs
  • Provide a mechanism for improved communication and co-ordination between existing on-going regional and global interoperability projects
  • Promote the activities of the RDA to the marine data management community and encourage membership of the relevant IG/WG to ensure relevant experts from marine domain contribute to RDA activities.

Furthermore the group agreed on the following actions:

  • Draft case statement to be completed and submitted to RDA for endorsement
  • Develop the RDA Marine Data Harmonisation IG membership to include representatives and experts from the marine data management community (signing up to RDA forum etc)
  • Establish partnerships with other relevant IG/WGs for the purposes of bilateral exchange of expertise
  • Engagement with other IG/WGs: encouraging experts from marine research domain to participate in relevant IG/WGs
  • IODE is currently addressing standards for physical oceanography and could potentially sponsor members of relevant WG/IGs to participate in workshops/meeting
  • Members of relevant of RDA WG/IGs will be invited to participate in the Ocean Data Interoperability Platform workshops
  • IODE will also package and disseminate information relevant to the activities of the RDA Marine Data Harmonisation Group to the membership of the group as well as more widely across the marine data management community
  • Initiatives such as the Science Consortium for Ocean Replenishment (SCORE) will also be used to promote the RDA and disseminate relevant information

Ms Glaves subsequently reported on the outcome of the Group to the Plenary Meeting on 18 September.
