HISTORY OF THE SERVICE

The ODINAFRICA Data Facility (developed under the Ocean Data and Information Network for Africa), has been conceived by the IOC Project Office for IODE in 2006. The service was intended to supervise the correct functioning of the sea level gauges installed by the ODINAFRICA project during its 3rd phase (2004-2008) and alert station operators in case of malfunctioning. This was considered as an essential service to ensure an operational tsunami warning and mitigation system.

The technical development of the service was implemented by the Flanders Marine Institute (http://www.vliz.be) as a direct contribution to GLOSS, the IOC tsunami programme and  ODINAFRICA-III.

In 2008 the service was expanded to all world oceans and will be further developed and maintained by VLIZ for GLOSS. The service is available on www.ioc-sealevelmonitoring.org
