ALD Post Title: Informatics Expert

Main responsibilities: (i) Assist with the development, documenting and maintenance of
web-based IODE data and information products, hosted by the IOC Project
Office for IODE in Oostende, Belgium; (ii) Manage the OceanTeacher distance learning system based upon Semantic Media Wiki (SMW) and Moodle; (iii) Assist the system administrator with the general management of the Project Office IT environment.
Profile:
• Advanced university degree (equivalent of a Masters degree) in
Informatics or Advanced Engineering degree, and not less than 2-4 years
experience, of which preferably 1 year has been acquired at the
international level;
• Extensive experience with development of web-based data and
information systems running on Linux servers (Red Hat, CentOS) using
MySQL, PHP, Ajax;
• Experience with end-user support (Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, MS-Office applications);
• Demonstrable experience in managing software development projects;
• Demonstrable experience in development of Joomla, Mediawiki and Moodle-based sites;
• Keen interest in new technologies and their application to oceanographic data and information management;
• Excellent inter-personal skills;
• Excellent command of the English language. Knowledge of a second
UNESCO/IOC working language (French, Spanish, Russian) will be an asset;
• Skills and effectiveness in written and oral communication and presentation.
Conditions of employment:
UNESCO’s salaries are calculated in US dollars but mainly paid in local
currency (Euro). They consist of a basic salary and a post adjustment,
which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station and
exchange rates. In addition, a family allowance will be paid for staff
members with a dependent family. Other benefits include a pension plan
and medical insurance.
For this post, the monthly remuneration, exempted of income tax, will be approximately € 3100.
Status, obligations and privileges:
Individuals holding an ALD have the status of staff members of UNESCO
and will be entitled to the privileges and immunities accorded to that
status.
Duration of appointment: This Appointment of Limited Duration (ALD)
is intended for an assignment of three years, with a possibility of
extension, exceptionally, for a fourth and final year.
Probationary period: ALD staff shall be subject to a period of probation of three months
Medical clearance: Medical clearance is required for all candidates prior to appointment.
Travel and related entitlements:
ALD staff will be granted travel and shipping entitlements: (i)
initial travel to the duty station upon appointment and repatriation
travel to the place of recruitment or country of nationality upon
separation from service (applicable to the staff member ONLY); (ii)
unaccompanied shipment of personal effects of up to 100 kilos, by
surface or air which ever cost is lower, upon appointment and upon
completion of service. In addition a lump sum travel allowance will be
paid upon completion of service.
Leave: Annual leave with full pay shall accrue at the rate of two
and a half days for each complete calendar month of continuous service.
