ICSU-WDS

ICSU and IODE have been partners since the early 1960s through the ICSU system of World Data Centres (WDCs) (especially the WDCs Oceanography in Silver Spring, USA; Obninsk, Russian Federation; Tianjin, China). A new ICSU World Data System (WDS) has been created through a decision of the 29th General Assembly of the International Council for Science (ICSU). WDS builds on the 50-year legacy of the ICSU World Data Centre system (WDC) and the ICSU Federation of Astronomical and Geophysical data-analysis Services. The WDS concept aims at a transition from existing stand-alone WDCs and individual Services to a common globally interoperable distributed data system, that incorporates emerging technologies and new scientific data activities. The new system will build on the potential offered by advanced interconnections between data management components for disciplinary and multidisciplinary applications.

The WDS has 4 types of membership: (i) regular members; (ii) network members; (ii) partner members; and (iv) associate members (MORE information here)

Within the new ICSU WDS, IODE has been recognized as a "network member".Network members represent groups of regular members. They serve as coordinating agents across regular nodes that have common characteristics and mostly common discipline. Through this membership all IODE NODCs are members of the ICSU WDS and can provide data to the WDS. Some NODCs may also be regular members if they manage marine or other data that are not covered by IODE.

The 1st ICSU World Data System Conference - Global Data for Global Science- , was held in Kyoto, Japan between 4 and 6 September 2011. In his paper "Providing quality-assessed oceanographic data and services to the international science community", co-authored with Lesley Rickards and Ariel Troisi, Greg outlined the 50 years of achievements by IODE. He gave special attention to the global network of NODCs and their functions, the existing collaboration with the former WDCs and their importance to IODE, as well as to the IODE ODP, ODS and IODE capacity development. The Conference was attended by more than 150 participants. IODE was represented by Greg Reed and Peter Pissierssens. In addition to the paper by Greg, IODE also presented a poster entitled "SCOR/IODE/MBLWHOI Library Collaboration on Data Publication".

In February 2013 ICSU and IOC/IODE signed a Letter of Agreement which defines the conditions under which IODE will contribute to the ICSU World Data System as a Network Member
