Tom Winterfeld passes away

10 March 2008 -Thomas Henry Winterfeld passed away at age 84 at Baltimore Washington Medical Center after a week-long illness. Mr. Winterfeld was born Sept. 21, 1923, in Berlin, Germany, and was raised in Berlin, Vienna, Austria; and Paris. He earned a master's degree at Northwestern University. He worked as a Oceanographer for the Department of Commerce-NOAA, Unicef, and other agencies. He was IODE Chair at the IODE Committee Sessions in 1979 (New York) and 1981 (Hamburg).

Thomas Winterfeld is survived by his wife, Sue T. Newman Winterfeld; son Dorian Winterfeld of Greenbelt; two stepsons, David Turner and Mark Turner of Queen Anne; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bond Chapel, 6735 Quaker Neck Road in Chestertown. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058, or to the American Cancer Society, 1041 Route 3 N., Gambrills, MD 21054.
