IODE Projects

The following 16 projects are implemented by the IODE programme

Every one of these projects or activities is implemented by many IODE experts through their national oceanographic data centres or marine library, or through the IOC Project Office for IODE, or both. Most of the projects are managed by Steering Groups.

AquaDocs

AquaDocs is a  new repository of merged content from the existing OceanDocs and Aquatic Commons repositories. Both repositories have been in existence for more than 12 years with continuing deposit and search activities from global stakeholders . Although both repositories have been successful in providing access to ocean and aquatic publications and other research outputs, maintaining two repositories with many of the same constituents and similar foci is not a sustainable solution and in September 2019 the decision was made to merge.

DIPS-4-Ocean Assessments

This project aims to develop biodiversity indices based on the Ocean Biogeographic Information System (OBIS) to support global assessments on the state of the marine environment, as well as publish an IOC UNESCO Global Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) Status Report based a global HAB data set in OBIS, the Harmful Algal Event Data-base (HAE-DAT) and the World Register of Marine Species/HAB (WoRMS/HAB).

GODAR

(
Global Oceanographic Data Archaeology and Rescue Project)

Global Oceanographic Data Archaeology and Rescue - The goal of GODAR is to increase the volume of historical oceanographic data available to climate change and other researchers by locating ocean profile and plankton data sets not yet in digital form, digitizing these data, and ensuring their submission to national data centers and the World Data Center System. In addition, data on electronic media that are at risk of loss due to media degradation are also candidates for rescue.

GOSUD

(Global Ocean Surface Underway Data Pilot Project)

The main objective of GOSUD (Global Ocean Surface Underway Data Pilot Project) is to collect, process, archive and disseminate in real time and delayed mode, sea surface salinity and other variables collected underway, by research and opportunity ships.

The Project is managed by the IODE Steering Group for GOSUD (SG-GOSUD) (currently inactive)

GTSPP

(Global Temperature-Salinity Profile Program)

The Global Temperature-Salinity Profile Program (GTSPP) is a cooperative international project. It seeks to develop and maintain a global ocean Temperature-Salinity resource with data that are both up-to-date and of the highest quality possible. Making global measurements of ocean temperature and salinity (T-S) quickly and easily accessible to users is the primary goal of the GTSPP.

ICAN

(IODE International Coastal Atlas Network Project)

The strategic goal of the IODE International Coastal Atlas Network Project (IODE/ICAN) is to encourage and help facilitate the development of digital atlases of the global coast, based on the principle of distributed, high-quality data and information. These atlases can be local, regional, national or international in scale. This can be achieved by sharing knowledge and experience among atlas developers in order to find common solutions for coastal web atlas development whilst ensuring maximum relevance and added value for the users.

IQuOD

To produce, freely distribute and curate the highest quality, most complete and consistent global ocean subsurface temperature profile repository for Earth system, climate and ocean studies, with (intelligent) metadata and an uncertainty estimate for every observation. This aim will be achieved through coordination of resources and expertise into a single best practice international community effort.

OBIS

(Ocean Biodiversity Information System Project)

OBIS was established by the Census of Marine Life program (www.coml.org) in 2000 and was accepted as a project under IOC/IODE in 2011. OBIS is a free and open access data holding and sharing facility with over one million marine species observations per year since 1990, and is built and maintained by a global alliance that collaborates with scientific communities to support the application of biodiversity data and information on marine life, in all ocean basins.

OBPS

(Ocean Best Practices System)

The OBPS is a global, sustained system comprising technological solutions and community approaches to enhance management of methods as well as support the development of ocean best practices.

OceanExpert

The OceanExpert system, formerly known as Global Directory of Marine (and Freshwater) Professionals, is a database containing information on individuals active on issues related to the marine (and freshwater) environment. It is intended to be a tool for scientists, policy makers and anyone who needs to contact a marine (or freshwater) professional.

ODIS

(Ocean Data and Information System Project)

The objectives of this project are to: (i) develop the IOC Ocean Data and Information System (ODIS) as an e-environment where users can discover data, data products, data services, information, information products and services provided by Member States, projects and other partners associated with IOC; (ii) work with partners, linked and not linked to the IOC, to improve the accessibility and interoperability of existing data and information. It will contribute to the development of a global ocean data and information system, to be referred to as the IOC Ocean Data and Information System, leveraging established solutions where possible; (iii) start its development using already existing “ecosystem component” such as, inter alia, the ODIS Catalogue of Sources (ODISCat), the Ocean InfoHub project, and all IODE data and information products and services, and to add components within and outside the IODE programme as these become available to and interoperable with the ODIS ecosystem.

ODIS Cat

(Ocean Data and Information System Catalogue of Sources)

The ODIS "Catalogue of Sources" aims to be an online browsable and searchable catalogue of existing ocean related web-based sources/systems of data and information as well as products and services. It will also provide information on products and visualize the landscape (entities and their connections) of ocean data and information sources.

OIH

(Ocean InfoHub Project)

The Ocean InfoHub (OIH) Project aims to improve access to global oceans information, data and knowledge products for management and sustainable development.

The OIH will link and anchor a network of regional and thematic nodes that will improve online access to and synthesis of existing global, regional and national data, information and knowledge resources, including existing clearinghouse mechanisms. The project will not be establishing a new database, but will be supporting discovery and interoperability of existing information systems.

OTGA

(OceanTeacher Global Academy Project)

The objective of OceanTeacher is to provide training tools for Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange. These tools are used during IODE Training Courses but can also be used for self-training and continuous professional development.

PacMan

The project will develop a national invasive species monitoring system as well as an early-warning decision-support tool for Pacific SIDS, offering a user-friendly dashboard indicating the potential presence of invasive species (including pathogens and pest species) or risk of invasions to support local management. The project will achieve this goal through a work plan that includes (i) needs assessment and review of current best practices in detecting invasive species; (ii) training of local scientists in field sampling, sample processing, DNA sequencing and data management; (iii) establishing and operating national invasive species monitoring plans; (iv) building a bioinformatics pipeline to improve the availability of metabarcoding data from biofouling communities and feed these into global data infrastructures and (v) develop the decision-support tool. Strong stakeholder engagement will ensure that the marine bioinvasions monitoring plan and the information and services of the decision-support tool contribute to and meet the requirements of local management (triggering rapid response).

QMF

(IODE Quality Management Framework Project)

The IODE Quality Management Framework (IODE-QMF) provides the overall strategy, advice and guidance for NODCs to design and implement quality management systems (QMS) for the successful delivery of oceanographic and related data, products and services.

WOD

(World Ocean Database)

The World Ocean Database (WOD) is the world's largest collection of uniformly formatted, quality controlled, publicly available ocean profile data. It provides open access to international oceanographic data spanning the global ocean and the period from 1772 to the present. WOD is a roject of the IOC’s International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) . The World Ocean Database was first released in 1994 and updates have been released approximately every four years. The most recent World Ocean Database series, WOD18, was released in 2018 and contains over 17 million profiles (Boyer et al. 2018: World Ocean Database 2018. A.V. Mishonov, Technical Ed., NOAA Atlas NESDIS 87. https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/sites/default/files/2020-04/wod_intro_0.pdf). WOD is updated quarterly and available online both at the World Ocean Database Mirror at the UNESCO/IOC Project Office for IODE (http://wod.iode.org/SELECT/dbsearch/dbsearch.html) and https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/products/world-ocean-database).
