Objectives
The objectives of this project are to:
- make aquatic and marine science information FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) and address the needs of both the scientific users and society at large.
- offer a repository platform to those organizations and individuals without the infrastructure to support their own.
- provide a capacity development opportunity for IODE and IAMSLIC Community.
Establishment
The AquaDocs Project was established through Decision IODE-XXVI.8.2 (Establishment of the AquaDocs Project):

ESTABLISHMENT OF THE AQUADOCS PROJECT
The IODE Committee,
Recognizing that:
- free and open access to ocean information addresses the needs of both scientific users and society at large;
- IODE has successfully established a permanent open access repository offering the scientific community a platform to publish their ocean-related research;
- IODE and IAMSLIC have established close, efficient and effective collaboration in marine science information.
Noting that AquaDocs will support all IOC programmes including the new Ocean InfoHub and ODIS, and contribute to the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and UN Sustainable Development Goals by providing a permanent curated archive of research publications and multimedia in ocean sciences;
Decides to:
- close the IODE OceanDocs project;
- establish the AquaDocs repository as a joint IODE-IAMSLIC-FAO/ASFA project with the terms of reference as attached in Annex 1 to this decision;
- establish the IODE Steering Group for the AquaDocs project with the terms of reference as attached in Annex 2 to this decision;
Urges Member States to actively participate in the AquaDocs project by submitting relevant ocean publications and multimedia, and promote the use of AquaDocs at the national, regional and global level;
Invites relevant stakeholders to contribute ocean publications and collaborate with AquaDocs.
Annex 1
Terms of Reference of the AquaDocs Project
Objectives: The objectives of this project are to:
- make aquatic and marine science information FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) and address the needs of both the scientific users and society at large.
- offer a repository platform to those organizations and individuals without the infrastructure to support their own.
- provide a capacity development opportunity for IODE and IAMSLIC Community.
Annex 2
Terms of Reference of the IODE Steering Group for the AquaDocs project
The SG-AquaDocs will:
- propose the vision, strategy, work plan, and timetable for AquaDocs Project.
- advise on technical aspects such as user interface, back office, etc. to the technical service provider;
- report to the IODE and IAMSLIC (and to any future partners/sponsors) on the progress of the AquaDocs Project;
- advise on the creation of task teams as needed, for example, copyright/permissions, promotion, recruitment, and training.
Membership: The IODE Steering Group for the AquaDocs project will be composed, inter alia, of:
- project manager/s
- IODE IT Advisor
- invited Experts from the IODE, IAMSLIC and global information communities
- representatives of the IODE Secretariat and IAMSLIC Executive Board
The Chair (or co-Chairs) will be appointed by the Steering Group from its membership, with a term limit of two sessions. The frequency of meetings will be proposed by the Steering Group in their proposed work plan and budget and can be once every year or every two years.
Governance/Management
The Project is governed by the Steering Group for AquaDocs. (Membership) in accordance with the above Terms of Reference, Decision IODE-XXVI.8.2, Annex 2.
The AquaDocs Repository is managed by a volunteer team of marine science information managers.
Activities
In addition to Steering Group Meetings, SG-AquaDocs offers Training Courses supported by training materials e.g. User Guides (including in non-English languages); promotes AquaDocs through conference presentations, and works towards the continuous improvement of AquaDocs.

History
AquaDocs is the successor of the OceanDocs project and the IAMSLIC Aquatic Commons that jointly agreed in October 2019 to merge their document repositories and continue this repository as "AquaDocs".
