The objective of OceanTeacher is to provide training tools for Oceanographic Data and Information management. These tools are used during IODE Training Courses but can also be used for self-training and continuous professional development. The Ocean Teacher web site is comprised of two components:
• The OceanTeacher Digital Library
• The OceanTeacher Classroom
OceanTeacher started in 1997 as the "IODE Resource Kit" used to provide oceanographic data and information management training in Eastern Africa under the ODINEA (Ocean Data and Information Network for Eastern Africa) project. The Kit, developed as an html-based reference tool, was further developed and expanded and made available on CD-ROM as well as through the IODE wb site. In 2001 the Kit was renamed to "OceanTeacher" and a dedicated web site was set up.You can find ot more about the OceanTeacher History HERE .

The OceanTeacher Digital Library contains a wide range of marine data-management and information-management materials, including software, quality control and analysis strategies, training manuals, and relevant IOC documents. The Kit provides a broad spectrum of background information on global data and information archiving activities, specifications for data storage in standard formats, and the software tools to perform many quality control, sub-setting, and analyses techniques.
The OceanTeacher Classroom is a collection of outlines, notes, examples, and miscellaneous documents used in conjunction with the Resource Kit to organise training programs in marine data and information training. These training programs are designed for the instruction of ocean data and information managers of newly established NODCs, DNAs and Marine Information Centres.
Since 2006 OceanTeacher also includes a range of video lectures. These are recordings of training sessions presented at the IOC Project Office for IODE in Oostende, Belgium. They can be viewed online (streaming video) at low or high bandwith. These lecturers complement the OceanTeacher training curriculum and can also be used by participants in IODE training courses to review the courses they attended in Oostende.
Visit the IODE Video Library here The different courses (as well as videos of other IODE activities) can be found under the title of the Course.

OceanTeacher Management
The OceanTeacher project is managed by the IODE Steering Group for OceanTeacher.
History
The history of OceanTeacher goes back to 1998 when the IODE Officers recommended the development of a Pilot Project proposal for an "IODE Resource Kit CD-ROM". In fact the IODE Resource Kit was a follow-up to the Ocean-PC project developed in the ealy 1990s. The objectives of the IODE Resource Kit were (i) to constitute a computer-based tool as a follow-up and complement to IODE Data and Information
Management activities; (ii) to contain a number of modules which address marine data and information management requirements in the marine research process, going from programme design to program report; and (iii) to support the development of marine data and information management capabilities. The 16th Session of the IODE Committee then established the "IODE Resource Kit Project" (Recommendation IODE-XVI.7) and also established the IODE Steering Group for the IODE Resource Kit Project.
The Steering Group met for its First Session in Miami, Florida. The Resource Kit was Project was subsequently (jn 2003 renamed "OceanTeacher" and the web site http://www.oceanteacher.org was created.
